Derek was born near Edinburgh and was educated there and at the Universities of Aberdeen and Durham. As well as teaching music, he is also a performer, lecturer and keen audience member of a wide range of musical styles.
He regularly lectures for SKAG, U3A, The Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, The Manchester Wagner Society, of which he is president and many other educational and learned organisations.
