Unravelling the Architecture of Westminster Abbey
Wed 9 Apr 2025, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Westminster Abbey is one of the world’s most famous churches, images of its interior beamed into television sets around the world during royal weddings, funerals and coronations. But how much do you know about the Abbey and its fabric? In this two-hour talk, medieval art historian Katherine Alcock will take us on a journey through the story of the Abbey’s buildings, using archaeological evidence to unravel what we know about the first buildings on the site, and hunting for clues in the fabric of the existing building to shed light on how the church has changed over the centuries. From monastery to tourist attraction, from royal mausoleum to a place of public commemoration.
