Neighbours and Enemies: War for the Holy Land
Wed 15 Jan 2025, 10:00 am - Wed 12 Feb 2025, 12:00 pm
This small patch of land, between the Mediterranean Sea and the River Jordan, holy for three world religions, has been fought over for three millennia. This course takes a long view of this conflict. It begins by looking at the creation of the kingdom of Israel and the conflict between Jew and Roman that ended in its destruction. It goes on to examine the experience of the Jews living among Christians and Muslims until the rise of Zionism in response to antisemitism, culminating in the Holocaust and the foundation of the modern state of Israel. Finally it examines the conflict between Israel and the Arab states and the Palestinians laying claim to the same land.
