This single session will act as an introduction to the Royal and Merchant Navies in Victorian Days.
Designed as an enticing taster for a possible longer course to follow, this session will briefly consider some of the following aspects:
• Ship design and development
• Oceangoing travel
• Hazards at sea
• Emigration to Australia and Canada
• Transport ships to the Crimean War
• The American Civil War: building the Confederate Navy
• Ironclads and raiders
• Shipwrecks
• The Plimsoll Line
• Threats to British Naval supremacy
• Brunel’s steamships

Bio: Bill Lindsay, Independent Scholar, retired twelve years ago from a lifelong career in the pharmaceutical industry. Since then, he has turned to researching Victorian Merchant Shipping and has become a member of several Nautical Societies. Bill has written many articles on the subject and is currently editor of the online magazine Topmasts for the Society for Nautical Research
