Our official name is Letchworth Educational Settlement but we are generally known as “The Settlement” or “Letchworth Settlement”. We were founded in 1920 so we are now into our second century! We are a charity providing a centre for adult non-vocational education in arts and crafts, languages and humanities, and other recreation and social activities.
We bring people together to “Meet, Learn and Create” in a lively social environment that promotes health and mental wellbeing.
We occupy a unique Grade II listed Arts and Crafts building in the world’s first Garden City. Our building is also a community hub with over thirty local groups using it on a regular basis, including the Settlement Players who use our Little Theatre.
Our vision is:
- To continue as a special venue for education and a community hub for Letchworth Garden City and the local area.
- To strengthen our position as a leading provider of adult non-vocational education and creativity in the wider local area.
- To improve facilities for arts and crafts courses and become the local centre for the Arts and Crafts including exhibition space for the work of learners, local artists and crafts people and others.
Throughout our history we have demonstrated the values of equality, diversity and inclusion. We want everyone using the Settlement to feel safe and respected.
Our aim is to promote, support and celebrate differences and to foster an inclusive community for the benefit of all. We will not tolerate any form of harassment or intimidation of anyone at the Settlement.
We are not an endowed charity, so we are dependent on the income we generate from our activities to meet our running and other costs.
